I Sat Down with Anthony Camargo from Renowned Jewelry Brand: Anthony Nak

This week I was able to sit down with Anthony Camargo, one half of the very successful jewelry brand Anthony Nak. He won awards such as the FGI Rising Star Award and the CFDA Emerging Talent Award and had his jewelry modeled by countless celebrities such as Lindsey Lohan, Jennifer Lopez, Scarlett Johansen, Oprah, and Mandy Moore. He is an inspiration to designers who want to make it in the world of fashion.

When I met Anthony at the coffee shop, I could tell he had important things to do as he typed away on his computer. I was so grateful that he was taking thirty minutes to sit down and talk to me about where I want to go in my career. He started off telling me all about his rise to fame and how it was as much hard work as it was creativity. He looked at what people wanted; truly desired and created a career out of it. He started out by taking old furniture that the wealthy donated and spicing it up. He had a system where some of the profits would go back to the people who donated, some would go to the AIDS organization, and the remaining would go to him expanding the business. Something that started as a glorified yard sale turned into lines of people down San Francisco waiting to be a part of this phenomenon. People loved the idea of helping AIDS organizations and it was the latest thing. Anthony saw the opportunities here and started working with clothes and eventually jewelry as well.

Well, our thirty minutes turned into four hours! He told me all about finding his partner, the ups and downs of being “in”, and his misadventures with celebrities. He also gave me great advice on how to get my career started. First, New York is where it is at. I have been wondering if I should go back home and pursue my love in Los Angeles or in New York. As a brand owner who has done his fair share of hiring many people, Anthony said that when he sees schools from New York on a resume, it speaks volumes. There is a certain flare about the city that inspires everyone. Second, he encouraged me to reach out to organizations such as Fashion group International (FGI). Anthony had previously won their rising star award and it is what kickstarted his career. Getting involved in those organizations young, can get your name out there. Lastly, he told me to start a blog. I never would have pictured me as a blog writer or saying anything that anyone would want to hear, but he convinced me. So here I am with my blog and I hope that I can reach just one person who is inspired by fashion and can learn something.

So that was my week ladies and gents. I guess we will see what is in store for next week.
